Emily Hein, Hesston Steal The Show In The Rain
The two previous 3A state champions met at Rim Rock Farm one final time as both Emily Hein (Wichita Trinity Academy) and Bree Allen (Prairie View) clashed in the rain.
Hein led Smoky Valley's Esther Clark and Allen under 6:00 through the first mile, but by the time she crossed the two mile marker she had a solid 43 seconds between her and the challengers.
Just like she did a year ago, Hein pushed up Cemetery Hill, crossed the Jim Ryun Skyline and broke the tape all by herself, winning by 56 seconds over Allen.
Hein ran 18:26, while Allen and Clark clocked 19:22 and 19:35 to round out the top three.
Cimarron's Janae Fugitt and Hesston's Reese Quinn took fourth and fifth as they crossed in 19:44 and 19:47.
Quinn's big-time performance was just enough for the Swathers to make history, as they took down Trinity and Southeast of Saline, 104-105-109.
Avery Larson and Ashley Lehman's seventh and 13th place finishes was the turning point for Hesston, just barely too much for either challenger to match.
Hesston also ended Southeast of Saline's state title streak, capping it off at four-in-a-row.
