Logan Beckman, Spring Hill Make History
Is there anything better than winning your first state title while leading your team to its first state title in program history? If you ask Spring Hill's Logan Beckman, the answer is no.
It was a race that saw the three best teams in Kansas go head-to-head-to-head with history on the line. If two-time defending champions Blue Valley Southwest would have won, they would have been the fifth team to ever achieve a three-peat in 5A, joining St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Carroll, Great Bend, and Kapaun Mt. Carmel to do so. If the Kapaun Crusaders pulled in the win, it would have ended a 43-year title drought. The last time they won - 1981 - it was to cap off a three-peat.
But while two contenders were chasing another title, Spring Hill was pursuing their first state title in program history.
In the end, Spring Hill held off Southwest and Kapaun, 35-40-74. The final dagger was Spring Hill's ability to put all five scoring runners inside the top 16 places, as Logan Beckman, Calen George, Daghyn True, Zachary Anderson, and Dylan Estes went 1-3-5-14-16.
The Timberwolves ultimately kept pace with the champs down the homestretch, going 4-6-8-11-15, but Beckman and George were the difference makers.
Elijah Chavez, Alex Roberts,, and Canyon Buehler were the top performers for Southwest, while Kapaun was led by Daniel Enriquez in 10th.
De Soto's Vance Krudwig, Topeka West's Adrian Lehman, and Topeka-Seaman's Brody Anderson finished runner-up, sixth, and ninth as they were the only runners not on one of the three podium teams inside the top 10.
