Analysis: We're not even a full week into September and Austin Vandegrift has already picked up a pair of wins in truly dominant fashion. Most recently, the Vipers cruised to a big-time win at the Marcus Coach T. Invitational, putting all five scorers inside the top 17 finishers to total a measly 43 points for a 102-point win over Round Rock. The week prior, the 2023 UIL 6A runners-up opened their season perfectly, going 1-2-3-4-5 at the Vista Ridge Cross Country Invitational.
After closing the gap on Southlake Carroll towards the end of last season, Hudson Haley and his teammates are coming out of the gates hot, and boy do they look scary. Haley lowered his PB all the way down to 14:48, and Kai McCullough broke 15:00 over 5000m for the first time, running 14:53. With the rest of their top five at 15:31 or faster and a pack time of 43 seconds, this year's Viper squad is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
