Boys Athletes To Watch: Savian Taylor (Smiths Station, AL), Jace Jones (Thompson, AL)
Girls Athletes To Watch: Lainey Phelps (Homewood, AL)
Breakdown: A total of eight boys are seeded faster than 2-minutes, which would make the first section of this race on Friday an entertaining one. But we're looking at Taylor and Jones, who should battle it out in the final laps. Taylor, the returning state indoor champion at 800m, went 1:56.96 on Dec. 7 in his first and only attempt at the distance thus far, while Jones went 1:57.73 on Jan. 15.
Jones, however, owned a US No. 1 time in the 1,600m for a brief minute, and his current US No. 3 4:13.89 is 16 seconds faster than Taylor's best at the same distance. But Taylor has split 51-seconds out right in the 400m. So what wins out: Speed or endurance?
Meanwhile, Phelps will be eyeing a potential foray into sub-2:10 territory. She's an 11-time state champion in Alabama across cross country, indoor and outdoor, but her best of 2:12.43 came in 2017 as a freshman. She opened up her season in December with a 2:17.56 and followed in January with a 2:17.78.
