Latham Becomes 27th Boy to Run Sub Four-Minute Mile
---
On a historic evening in Atlanta, Georgia, Marist High School standout Tommy Latham etched his name into the record books, delivering a performance that will be remembered for years to come. Competing in front of a roaring crowd filled with teammates, friends, and supporters at his home track, Latham made history at the Marist Mile, his home event, by breaking the elusive four-minute barrier in the mile.
Latham crossed the finish line with a time of 3:59.79, making him the first high school athlete from Georgia to achieve this remarkable feat and only the 27th high school runner in U.S. history to dip under four minutes.
This record-breaking run is just the latest in a series of standout performances from Latham during his senior season. Earlier in the year, he claimed victory at the prestigious Millrose Games high school boys' mile, clocking 4:00.94 at The Armory in New York. He then continued his dominance on the track by winning the 2-mile event at Nike Indoor Nationals with a blistering time of 8:44.35, setting yet another Georgia all-time best.
Latham now joins an exclusive group of high school athletes who have shattered the four-minute barrier in 2024. He is the fourth prep runner to achieve this milestone this year, alongside Crater High School (OR) teammates Josiah Tostenson and Tayvon Kitchen, as well as Mercer Island (WA) senior Owen Powell.
While Latham's historic run stole the show, the competition at the Marist Mile was fierce. Jack Bowen of McCallie School in Tennessee secured second place with a strong 4:05.21, while Georgia's own Jameson Pifer, a junior from Collins Hill, ran 4:05.64 to claim third place.
With the outdoor season in full swing, Latham's sub-four-minute mile adds fuel to the excitement surrounding high school distance running. As he continues to push his limits, fans and fellow competitors alike will be watching to see what he accomplishes next on the track.
