Fans of NCAA XC may have been asking themselves on Saturday, "Who exactly is Ben Shearer?" after the University of Arkansas sophomore won Pre-Nationals in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Shearer was a member of the Razorbacks' NCAA squad last year, finishing 155th.
But after his performance on Saturday at Panorama Farms, he may have in fact entered his name into the hat as far as All-Americans go.
All that being said, Shearer is not some sort of surprise collegiate star. He was a legitimate stud in high school. Today, we're throwing back to a workout that we shot during Shearer's time with Woodlands Christian in 2020.
Over his high school career, Shearer took home two TAPPS State XC titles -- and led the Warriors to two team wins -- before he finished fifth at the 2019 NXR South Regional and earned two more state titles in the 800m and 1,600m outdoors.
He ran a personal best of 14:39.60 for 5K at the Desert Twilight XC Festival in 2020.
This past weekend at Pre-Nationals, the ran an 8K PR of 20:55, scoring both an individual and helping Arkansas to a team win.
