Analysis: You can't ask for much more than a returning five.
But that's exactly what Stevens Point, the defending Wisconsin Division I champions, are getting back in 2023: Their top five scorers following a banner season.
A year ago, the Panthers finished second at NXR Heartland and then 15th at NXN and once again proved they are among the premier programs in the Heartland region.
Two seniors, Aloysius Franzen and Bode Erickson, finished three and four at the state meet and will likely lead the squad this fall. The team sports a returning average of 15:38.02, which ranks at No. 8 for the incoming season.
Biggest Question: Can they become a top 10 team nationally?
Can a team from the Heartland Regoin like Stevens Point, which will showcase an all-star team in 2023, get past traditionally strong outlets from the Northwest, Midwest and California? It's often tough sledding for teams outside those areas. But in 2023, if any year is the year, this one is it.
