Webb is the first modern superstar of the 2000s. In 2001, when the Virginia native broke Jim Ryun's all-time high school boys mile record of 3:55.30 -- which had stood since 1965 -- you could have argued that it would open the floodgates for more success at the distance at the prep ranks.
But it only made the record that more untouchable.
While the walls for the sub-4 mile in high school seems to be coming down (a total of 18 boys have now crossed the threshold), Webb's record will take a herculean effort -- and perhaps the right field -- for it to be accomplished in the future.
