No. 1: Newbury Park (CA)
- - -
Analysis: The best team in history is behind us. Now we need to look forward to what the 2022 version can offer us. If healthy, the Panthers can certainly try to eclipse that legendary campaign. But don't expect a lot of races out of the team's top runners this season. There are already signs that Leo and Lex Young are going to limit their all-out race efforts this year in the hopes of qualifying for the World U20 Cross Country Championships in Australia.
What that will mean is that Newbury Park might not be invincible in every race it enters athletes into. But that could lead to some vital progression from the likes of Brayden Seymour, Hector Martinez, Dev Doshi and others. Five runners are back from the national and CIF state championship team in 2021.
Biggest Question: Can this team surpass last year's squad as the best ever?
In theory, it can. Leo and Lex and Aaron have matured a full year after their exploits last December. Brayden Seymour has transferred in. Hector Martinez and Dev Doshi were high-flying back-scorers in 2021. Sure, losing Colin Sahlman will hurt. But could we still see this team scoring the first three at most meets -- possibly even the first four or five?
That will be a question that will get answered soon enough.
Schedule:
CIF Southern Section Championships, November
CIF State Championships, November
Nationals, December
X Factor: Developing the team's four, five, six and seven.
This is all relative, considering Newbury Park's four, five, six and seven all could reasonably be No. 1s on a lot of other teams. Hector Martinez ran 14:52 for 5K a season ago, Dev Doshi went 14:59 and Aaron Cantu went 15:29, despite only running one race the 5K distance on the season. Leo, Lex and Aaron will be trusted to score single-digit points, but how will the rest of the squad follow? If last year's team was the best ever, does this one surpass it?
