In 2017, Cooper Teare of St. Joseph Notre Dame (NC) stepped on to the track for the boys mile at the Brooks Mt. Sac Relays. He was trying to become the 10th high school miIer to break four minutes.
Teare had a strong start, splitting evenly for the first two laps at 60 seconds while being on the heels of the pacer. But the race quickly turned into the "Cooper Teare Show" as he split 61 seconds for his third lap. He needed to run 58 seconds in the final 400m to accomplish this feat.
It was a nail-biting finish between Teare and the clock. He crossed the line in 4:00.16, just a hair away from accomplishing his mission.
Three years later, Teare is now a junior at the University of Oregon, and one of the program's most accomplished distance runners. This February, he ran 3:55.50 indoors at the 2020 Boston University Last Chance Invitational.
