One of the noteworthy differences between long-distance running on the track versus cross country is the presence of hill running. Cross country runners must be capable of negotiating the challenges of hills.  

Naturally, hill running takes leg strength as well as stamina, and without these physical attributes, hills will take a toll on a runner towards the end of a race.
