Analysis: The team from Clovis North High School in Fresno, California, has a strong returning core from 2018. The team will return all of its top five and six of its top seven. The only guy who graduated last year from their state meet squad was Ethan Fusselman, who was their seventh man. All six other guys have state meet experience after finishing 10th in the Division 1 CIF State Cross Country Championships. This year's squad will consist of four seniors, a junior, and a sophomore all looking to bring their experience at the state level to challenge some of California's Division 1 powerhouse programs like Dublin, Dana Hills, and, of course, Great Oak. They should have a strong front-runner in rising senior
Isaiah Galindo, who finished seventh at state ,running 15:12.60. The teams speed ratings from the state meet in 2018 were 188, 175, 165, 165, 151, and 146.
Biggest question: Will their 1-5 split be their Achilles' heel?
Last year at the CIF State Meet, this team had the second-largest 1-5 split out of all the 22 teams on the line in the Division 1 race. Palo Alto High School had the largest 1-5 split in 21st place with a 2:10, followed by Clovis North in 10th with a 1:49 1-5 split. With that many guys spread throughout the field, it will be hard to take a podium spot at the state meet. The top three teams last year in the Division 1 CIF State Championships had 1-5 splits all well under a minute. The guys from Clovis North will really need to close that gap, especially in the middle of their pack, if they want to finish inside the top five this year.
