Analysis: 2018 marked a year of firsts for Masciarelli, who was sublime in her first true season of cross country. The prep never ran slower than 17:12 for 5K and posted a personal best of 16:07.20 for 3-miles. But it was midway through the season when the Connecticut athlete started to shine, finishing fourth in a women's-laden Mayor's Cup in Boston, then earning a win at Foot Locker Northeast.
If the jury wasn't out on Masciarelli yet, it came full circle at Foot Locker Nationals, where she scored a national title with a near perfect race, winning in 17:00.30. She had three speed ratings over 150 and two over 160 to finish out the season.
If nothing else, the expectations are sky high for Masciarelli in 2019: She's coming off efforts of 9:21.44 in the 3,000m, 10:11.99 in the 2-mile and 16:16.20 in the 5K--the latter two races she earned national titles at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
