Summer Training Blog: Springville's Grant Gardner (Week 3)

Week 3

Monday 8/13/18

Ran 9 miles on a treadmill cause the air still isn't great. Definitely a different type of running, but I guess it will make me stronger and more ready for whatever gets thrown at me. Lifted pretty heavy right after.

Miles: 9

Tuesday 8/14/18

I was helping move my sister and her family to Salt Lake City all morning, so I was lifting heavy boxes all day. That made me kinda tired, but they live like a block away from the state course, so I went and ran it a few times which was a good reminder of what it is going to be like. I'm going for Casey Clinger's state record, and I'm only 15 seconds away (as of last year) So getting to know the course is going to help a lot.

Miles: 9

Wednesday 8/15/18

Workout day today. Did 7 x 1k with 60 seconds rest. 3:12, 3:10, 3:12, 3:10, 3:09, 3:07, 3:02. We did it on a mushy, wet field in trainers, so it was more difficult than the times suggest. But overall, good workout. First interval type workout of the season. Feeling in super good shape rn. Last year, this type of workout would have been very tough, but right now, it's pretty chill. We lifted heavy later in the day, and I am definitely feeling sore.

Miles: 10

Thursday 8/16/18

Ran 9 miles with Michael, with the last 3 around the school on grass. Had a couple sub 6 miles in there. It was a pretty hot day, but nothing too bad. Feeling sore from the lifting yesterday, but I like it.

Miles: 9

Friday 8/17/18

Our team had the first meet of the season today! The top 5 guys didn't race, but I still went up to support the team. The race was at the state course, so I ran it a few times just like I did earlier in the week. Good run. Last mile 5:22 and it felt like I was jogging.

Miles: 9

Saturday 8/18/18

Long run day!! I went to the Provo canal trail to do it, which is a pretty flat, paved trail. My goal was to keep the run at an alright pace, but still feel easy. My paces were 6:29, 6:16, 6:04, 6:06, 6:08, 6:16, 6:10, 6:08, 5:53, 6:00, 5:43, 5:48, 5:36, 5:50, 5:53. I was really happy with that run. I didn't even notice when we went 5:36 that we were going that fast. It just felt normal and natural. I was surprised at how good I felt. My breathing never got labored in the slightest, and my legs only got a little tired near the end of mile 15. I averaged 5:49 for the last 7 miles, and it was dang easy. Super happy with where my fitness is at right now, so I'm gonna be careful next week to not overdo it.

Miles: 15

Recap

Great week of training again! I am feeling very good, even with some good lifting sessions in the mix. That is my ideal training week right there, with in-season weeks maybe having an extra workout.
