Nevada Mareno has raced quick solo times in the early part of the season, but proved her worth on Saturday in defeating Flo50 No. 7 ranked Libby Davidson, 17:44.7 to 17:59.3. Davidson, a junior at E.C. Glass in Virginia, is an impressive scalp as the long distance specialist placed sixth at Foot Locker Nationals last fall and third at the NBNO 5k in 16:50.
The national indoor mile champion's time would have placed her 19th in the Collegiate Women's race, held on Friday night. NC State freshman Ryen Frazier won that race in 16:06.4 to destroy a course record set by NCAA 10k champion Juliet Bottorff. Mareno's claim to fame is outkicking Frazier to win the New Balance Nationals Indoor mile last winter - could cross country prowess be next on the list? A win over a talent like Davidson is indicative of impressive fitness.
Frazier's season-opening win was over her sister, Wesley, who ran 16:28.5 for second. The junior transfer from Duke is sitting out this cross country season due to ACC rules and raced in an unaffiliated singlet.
The Riverside girls of South Carolina continued to look strong in their first race across state lines, as they took the team title behind eighth-grader Jessie Crowley's sixth place, 18:28 finish.

Connor Lane of Cardinal Gibbons won the Boys Varsity race in a new meet record of 14:59 for a huge personal best, as the junior's prior best was 15:41. He cut a full minute off his 15:58 from last year's meet, where he placed 23rd.
