9/20 High School XC Weekend Recap

Richard Spring Invitational (IL)

September 20, 2014 Detweiller Park in Peoria, IL

Despite missing two of their top runners, the US #8 ranked Glenbard West (IL) girls showed they have enough depth to win one of their state's best invitationals. Glenbard West had four girls in the top 14 and nearly all under 18 minutes include race runner-up Lindsay Graham in a time of 16:51. The Palatine girls with 80 points almost pulled off the upset over the defending Illinois 3A state champs from Glenbard West with 70 points.

In her team's home invitational, Peoria Notre Dame junior Maryjeanne Gilbert had the race of her life as she knocked 34 seconds off her 2013 Illinois state meet performance at Detweiler with her 16:30 victory at the Richard Spring Invitational. After running a 10:34 in the 3200 over the spring, Gilbert's huge time drop at Detweiler is no surprise though.

After seeing US #9 ranked Jesse Reiser roll out a 14:20 performance at Detweiler Park last week at the First to the Finish Line Invitational, US #13 Zach Dale was chasing Reiser's time on Saturday in Peoria. The Conant (IL) senior Dale had competition to push him late in the race including last weekend's Forest Park Festival (MO) champ Dorrian Gordon (3rd, 14:37), but was just short of matching Reiser's time in a still quick time of 14:29, which is two seconds better than his 2013 state race at Detweiler.

The Sandburg boys are another great time this fall out of Illinois to look out for nationally and showed it with a 17 second spread and 15:06 team average in winning the Notre Dame Peoria Invite by a margin of 128 points.
