Small Hollywood-area School goes National AND Global Jul 14, 2011

  When it comes to girls’ track and field, the Harvard-Westlake School (photos above by Jeff Sides) is one of those teams that can often get lost in the shuffle.  The small independent college preparatory school, located in Los Angeles, has an enrollment (grades 7-12) of roughly 1,600 with slightly more than half that total comprising its high school student body.

WV Athletes Shine at New Balance Outdoor Nationals Jun 19, 2011

  Greensboro, N.C.--While West Virginia is known nationally for its ability to produce outstanding distance runners, it was a sprinter that stole the show at New Balance Outdoor Nationals.   Harpers Ferry-native and current Jefferson star Dante Price won the Boys’ Emerging Elite 200-meter dash with a time of 21.95 seconds. Price, who is one of only two West Virginia sprinters to break 22 seconds in the event this year, missed his season personal best by .01 seconds.   Price also ran in the Boys’ Emerging Elite 100-meter dash clocking a time of 11.03 seconds, but failed to qualify for finals.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Some of New York’s top teams were stuck in airports or at home while their events went off at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals because of severe storms that rocked the New York City area yesterday.

Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) chased a fast time in the 2 Mile at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC tonight. Abbey ended up 9th overall with her 2nd fastest 2 mile of her outstanding career, 10:29.84. In the girls Mile racewalk Abby Dunn (Edward Little) earned 2nd place (7:44.24), Courtney Williams (Waterville) placed 3rd (7:48.17) while Gardiner's Annie Schide placed 6th (8:13.36). All 3 earned All-American status. On the Boys side Ian Rixon (Medomak Valley) placed 3rd (7:27.91) while Falmouth's Matthew Goldstein was 4th (8:21.62), both earned All-American Stataus.

Two Records fall at NB Outdoor Nationals Jun 16, 2011

Wesley Frazier (Raleigh, N.C.) set the national sophomore 5,000-meter record at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 16:24.83 at Aggie Stadium, on the campus of North Carolina A&T. St. Benedict’s superstar sophomore Edward Cheserek broke a meet record while claiming his first national title in the 5,000 in 14:25.74.
