August 20th marked the official start of the Cross Country practice season in the state of Rhode Island. All of the summer miles will start to pay off as many athletes return to their respective schools for the fall. MilesplitRI has taken the task of previewing both the Boys and the Girls competition for this coming year. Today we will be focusing on the boys individual competition.
My trip to New Balance Nationals began with another long car ride. I headed to North Carolina on Wednesday morning. We stayed with one of my mom’s friends, who we also stayed with when I go to Foot Locker South.

Greensboro, NC is a long way from TF Green, Manchester, Logan, and Bradley International Airports, the most likely beginning points for the Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut contingents that headed down to New Balance Nationals to run this weekend. The distance didn’t seem to deter any of them from traveling, competing, and then dominating. For a part of the country that makes up a small fraction of its population, the damage it did was significant. Here are just some of the highlights from those states’ athletes that made the journey and competed in the championship events.

Several West Virginia Athletes competed at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals this weekend at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC. Jacob Burcham led the way with a National Championship in the One Mile Run added to his resume.

Holy Cross Junior Jacob Thomson finished as the National Runner-Up in the 5000 Meter Run tonight at New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina.
Ashley Erba's 5K was the highlight of the opening day, while Kris Horn took control of the decathlon competition.
Waterville's Bethanie Brown added her name to the record brooks once again with a 7th place finish in the 5k at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Brown clocked 17:11.13, which bettered the previous record of Erica Jesseman by 40 seconds

A good number of Floridians will be headed to Greensboro, NC this weekend for New Balance Outdoors. We will have a large team there on-site coverage through our MileSplit national team, including our own Todd Grasley, Jeff Adams, and Chris Sumner.
The National Scholastic Sports Foundation is an organization dedicated to the support of junior age (sub-20) and high school track and field. Aside from offering support to the USATF Junior Track and Field and selected high school track and field meets, we own and operate the NB Indoor Nationals, the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, and the Great American Cross Country Festival.
