There's a mystique about the Elmwood Short Nine cross country course at Pueblo's City Park. For many years, it hosted the Colorado state cross country meet. As the state meet has grown, the facility's capacity to handle the crush of parking and spectators (one narrow bridge is all that connects the two sides of the course unless you're willing to swim a canal of questionable water quality) has come into question. Regrettably, the course may never again host a state meet, but you can feel the ghosts of state meets past when you take a team to Elmwood.
And, there's a lot to like about this course aside from its history. Apparently, even the pocket gophers have found something to like about the course as well, as their handiwork was evident in a couple of places on the course.
