- Barcelona, Spain - Mary Cain (Bronxville, NY) might have only been 6th in the 1500 meters final at the IAAF World Junior Championships but she certainly electrified US fans and cemented her place in prep history with a blazing time of 4:11.01. The previous record was held by Jordan Hasay (Mission College Prep, CA; University of Oregon) a 2009 graduate who ran 4:14.50 at the US Olympic Trials in 2008.
Her finish was quite impressive given that Mary is only a Sophomore and is just 16 years of age. The race was won by Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon (Kenya) with a time of 4:04.96. Mary will have three more years to compete at the World Junior Champs, a scary prospect indeed if she keeps on her current pace of improvement.
During the 2012 outoor track season in the US Mary had several break-out performances that certainly led credence to this moment being bound to happen. Mary won the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships with a time of 4:14.74 and more recently qualified for the IAAF final with a time of 4:14.77. She also boasts a 2:03.34 clocking over 800 meters set in May.
Also winning for team USA was a very impressive Ajee Wilson (Neptune, NJ) in the 800m run, winning with a US#2 All-Time clocking of 2:00.91. Ajee won by a narrow margin over Jessica Judd (Great Britain) who was 2nd in 2:00.96.
Brianna Nerud (North Shore, NY) turned in a head-turning performance in the 3000m Steeplechase, starting with the preliminary rounds. After flirting with the USR of 10:15.26 all season long she dropped a super 10:08.15 to crush the record and qualify for the final in the event. So anything that came in the final was gravy, and Brianna poured it on as she scorched her way to a 5th place finish, shaving another 8 seconds off with a time of 10:00.72.
Another distance runner who came with her 'A' game was Cayla Hatton (Phillips Academy, MA) who finished 4th in the 5000m final with a US#2 All-Time clocking of 15:50.32, a time only bettered by Emily Sisson (Parkway Central, MO) who ran 15:48.91 in 2010.
Eric Futch (Penn Wood, PA) added a gold medal to the US contingent in a very tough event, the 400m Hurdles. Futch won the race with a personal record time of 50.24, good for US#13 All-Time and the world junior lead in the event for 2012.
Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep, NY), running for Guyana, finished 2nd in the 400m final with a blazing 51.04, good for US#5 All-Time.
GA prep Tyreek Hill (Coffee) finished 2nd in the 200m dash with a time of 20.54, just behind LSU's Aaron Ernest, who was 2nd in 20.53. A very impressive showing for Hill.
In the 400m Final Arman Hall (St. Thomas Aquinas, FL) finished 2nd with a time of 45.39 while Aldrich Bailey (Mansfield Timberview, TX) was 4th with a time of 45.52.
Team USA swept the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays as well. The women's 4x100 won with a time of 43.89 and included preps Jennifer Madu and Shayla Sanders alongside collegians Morgan Snow and Dezerea Bryant. The men won with a time of 38.67 and included preps Tyreek Hill and Aldrich Bailey in addition to collegians Arthur Delaney and Aaron Ernest. (flrunners.com recap on Sanders)
Shelbi Vaughan (Mansfield Legacy, TX) finished 3rd in the Discus finals with a throw of 60.07 meters which converts to 197-01.
Team USA finished out the week with wins in the 4x400m relays as well. The women took the gold with a time of 3:30.1 with prep Kendall Baisden on the squad. For the men the win came with a quick time of 3:03.99 and included preps Arman Hall and Aldrich Bailey. (flrunners.com recap on Hall)
