Saturday Recap: New Balance Nationals

A down-to-the-wire photo finish in the boys 4x400 was a fitting end to a meet in which relay performances were the brightest highlights.

It was a long and busy day at Aggie Stadium in Greensboro, NC, but it was worth the time to be there.  Exciting races and great performances were the norm, including several national leaders.  The relay races were particularly special today, and there were a few teams that established themselves as all-around powers with their varied performances.

Championship Field Events

Girls Hammer Throw

In the early rounds, nobody in the field really distinguished themselves until Monica Phillips (Lambert GA) broke the 160-foot mark with her third attempt.  Her Throw1Deep teammate Avana Story (Woodward Academy GA), having fouled twice in her flight, found her rhythm in the final and slipped ahead on the fifth throw to take the championship, while Sabrina Gaitan moved up into third on her last heave to make it a 1-2-3 sweep for the Georgia throws club.

Girls Javelin Throw

In contrast to the hammer, Shauntierah Douglas (Garfield NJ)  took command of the javelin throw with her first attempt, then had to sweat out two good attempts by Rebecca Skovira (Park Ridge NJ) to see it stand up for the win.  Lauren Lubarski (Hickory PA) closed out hard, moving into third on her final attempt.

Boys Pole Vault

Shawnacy Barber (Kingwood Park TX) had a self-described rough day, as the young man who has been over 17' 6" three times this calendar year was only able to manage 16' 4".  Still, his long drive was not in vain, as he goes home with a national championship for his efforts.  Jaime Salisbury (East China MI) and Patrick Anderson (Kane Area PA) both cleared 16 feet even, with Salisbury taking second on misses.

Boys Discus Throw

National leader Sam Mattis (East Brunswick NJ)  lived up to his billing, although the uphill throwing sector did seem to rob him of some of his normal distance.  He won with a distance of 203' 2", but also had two other throws over 200 feet.  A. J. Wolf (Hackley School NY) took control of second place on his second attempt, and was chased but not caught by Caleb Fricke (Porta IL).

Boys High Jump

To be honest, all of the competitors struggled today, with the final order of finish determined more by misses along the way rather than heights cleared.  The final five jumpers all cleared 6' 8.75", and when everything was sorted out it was Jake Scinto (Cheshire CT) who got to stand on the tallest step of the podium.  Michael Moffitt (Oak Hill IL) had a career day, closing out his high school career with a new PR and second place.  Incoming favorite Carl Heinz (Oak Park-River Forest IL) was unable to duplicate the magic he found at his state meet, and ended up tied for third with Chrisjaan Smith (Lawrence Central IL).

Boys Long Jump

Despite a favorable wind, the Mondo surface just wasn't giving up big jumps today, and many competitors were below their season best.  Not so for Cameron Luper (Auburn AL), however, who added 2 inches to his PR to take home the title.  Desmond Mobley (Greece-Olympia NY) was well behind his lightning-in-a-bottle 25-footer from the New York State Meet, although his 23' 11.75" effort was still above all his other jumps this season, and it was good for second place.  Jeron Brown finished third, helping to establish Lawrence Central (IN) as perhaps the best all-around team in this meet.

Jessica Woodard (Cherokee NJ) was the class of the field from her opening throw, and she improved on her next two to take an insurmountable lead, winning with her third throw of 45' 4.5".  Although that was short of her 46-foot PR, she still gets to take home the gold medal.  Nobody was able to improve their marks in the final three rounds, and so Kristen Sansbury (Hartsville SC) finished second with a PR of 44' 1.5".  Briyah Brown (New Rochelle NY) claimed third place, but was unable to match her season best.

Girls Long Jump

Although nobody could crack the 20-foot mark, this was a very tight competition, with five girls over 19 feet.  Carla Forbes had a narrow lead coming out of the preliminary rounds, and she was able to build on that to bring home the double win (she claimed the triple jump yesterday).  Marshay Ryan, wo had taken the early lead on her second attempt, had to settle for the silver medal, while Keturah Orji finished third.

Girls High Jump

Dakota Dailey-Harris was flawless through 5' 8.5", but was unable to clear the final height; nonetheless, her lack of missed earned her the championship over two others who also cleared the same height.  Alexis Perry (Jordan NC) finished second, while Megan Kirschling (), used a clutch third jump at 5' 8.5" to earn the bronze.

Girls 4xMile Relay

The race was close through the first two legs, as Saline (MI, running as Spirit of Pre) was right with Tatnall (running as Adrenaline).  Tatnall began to pull away over the last two legs, though, eventually opening up a dominant lead. The distance power from Delaware had set out to threaten the national record, and they ended up just short at US #3 all-time.  Saratoga Springs (NY) came up late on the final leg to take second away from Saline.

Boys 4xMile Relay

This race went down to the final lap before a winner was determined, as there were three teams within striking range of the title on the last lap.  Lawrence Central (IN) took the win with a strong anchor by Matt Dorsey, while Trabuco Hills (CA) will get to enjoy All-American status and silver medals on their long trip back across the country.  Chariho Regional (RI) was right behind, finishing third by only 0.65 seconds.

Girls 4x100m Shuttle Hurdles

Girls 800m Sprint Medley

After Withrow (OH) set a high standard in the first section by running 1:45.09, the second section produced a very exciting, close battle between four teams.  Four schools took the final exchange almost dead even: Newark Tech (NJ, running as Essex County Vo Tech), Bay Shore (NY), Great Oak (CA) and West Mecklenburg (NC).  Bay Shore took the section and the overall title by virtue of Jessica Gelibert's 55-second anchor leg, just edging Withrow's time and leaving the Ohio squad in second.  Devin Smith had a huge anchor to bring Pope John XXIII (NJ) up into third, with Great Oak and Newark Tech right behind them; the first four teams in the final section all ran under 1:46.

Boys 800m Sprint Medley

Based on the Swedish Relay on Thursday, you had to figure that Quincy Smith would bring home a win if Smiths Station (AL) was close through three legs.  Sure enough, the Alabama 400 star took the baton essentially even with Mount Vernon and Cherry Hill, and true to form Smith brought home the win with an emphatic final lap.  Smiths Station will take home the gold medals and the nation's top time, 1:30.23.  That left Mount Vernon and Cherry Hill to battle for second place, with Mount Vernon eventually prevailing.

Girls 2000m Steeplechase

This event is both a crowd favorite and a photographer's dream, especially at the water pit; I'm not sure if anyone actually stayed at the finish line to take photos there!  Amber Hollowood (Saratoga Springs NY) went to the front early, and she was able to open and maintain a small lead throughout the race, winning the championship with a time of 6:50.46.  Leila Mantilla (Penfield NY) and Amber Goodspeed (Middletown NY) were able to separate from the chase pack to take second and third, respectively.

Boys 400 Hurdles

This race was tight through 200 meters, but Jonathan Russell (Broad Run VA) had a strong final curve and was able to pull away slightly to take the win in 52.37.  Kadesh Roberts (Bay Shore NY) came up just short of bringing his school a sweep in this event, but he can be very happy with the silver; Drew Wiseman (Bismarck ND) finished third, only 0.1 seconds behind Roberts.

Girls 4x100

Withrow (OH) made a strategic decision to put their best girl at second leg, hoping to take the lead and pressure the top qualifier, Mount Vernon (NY), into a mistake.  That plan got Withrow to the final exchange with a solid lead, but Robbi Rogers blew by down the stretch to bring Mount Vernon the championship (and a celebratory pile-up on the infield).  Withrow held on for second, as surprising Southeast Raleigh (NC) had the race of their season to take third.

Boys 800m Run

Usually, a late charge by an athlete with 5 meters to make up in the final straight would be dramatic and energetic.  In this race, however, it was sneaky!  While everyone watched Zavon Watkins (Liverpool NY) duel with and eventually pass Robert Rhodes (Boys and Girls NY) down the last 100 meters, Ahmed Bile (Annandale VA, third in the photo below) slipped past on the inside to take the championship.  Bile and Watkins both broke 1:50, but it was the second close loss for the star from New York this week.  This was a tremendous race: all 8 in the final section were under 1:52, and four broke 1:51.

Girls 400m Run

This race was never in doubt.  After running a wind-aided 23.26 in the 200 prelims, Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers Prep NY) took charge of this race and never looked back, winning by over a second in 52..14, US #1 this season.  The junior was so tired after her race, she was unable to make the short turn-around to the 200 final, but no matter--she provided one of the best and most dominant performances of the night.  Let's not forget about Kyle Plante (Colonie NY), who set a new PR with her 53.32 for second place.  Olivia Baker (Columbia NJ) emerged from the main group to take third place, running 54.83.

In comparison, Michael Cherry (Oscar Smith VA) seemed to have energy to spare at the conclusion of his victory: he was loose and relaxed all the way through the line, smiling before he even broke the tape in 46.37.  After all the races were over, he told me he could have made the turn-around to the 200 final, but some confusion prevented him from getting to the start line.  Still, he got to the top of the podium, and that's the memory of a lifetime.  Cody Rush (Northwest NE) was able to make his way up into second place, running a small PR in the process.  After a week of heroics on the anchor legs of relays, Quincy Smith (Smiths Station AL) finally looked human, and he was unable to make his trademark surge to the finish, ending up third.

Girls Mile Run

Like the two mile last night, this race was crowded right from the start, and didn't begin to thin out until late in the third lap.  Kelsey Margey (Friends Academy NY) made her big move, and was able to hold on for the win, truly using every ounce of her energy in running 4:45.84 (it took her about 20 minutes to make it to the winner's tent).  She had to withstand one last charge from Wesley Frazier (Ravenscroft NC), last night's two-mile winner and the defending mile champion, who posted a 4:48.28 (although her night was definitely not over, as you will see if you keep scrolling down).  The bronze medal went to Kennedy Weisner (Elk County Catholic PA) for her 4:51.60 effort.

Boys Mile Run

Jacob Burcham (Cabell Midland WV) was the biggest name in the field by far, and he did not disappoint, essentially going wire-to-wire for the win.  The pack tried valiantly to keep up with him, but he was able to steadily pull away to win in 4:08.80.  The chase pack, however, provided an incredible pitched battle to the finish line, with seven guys finishing within one second of each other, at almost the exact same time as the first two runners from the first section earlier in the day.  Henry Wynne (Staples CT) emerged from that scrum in second place, while Jake Leingang (Bismarck ND) ended up third, just edging Thomas Awad's time from the other section.

In the absence of Baird, Ky Westbrook seized the opportunity to earn a double win, as she had claimed the 100 title yesterday.  Her time of 23.92 was enough to hold off Diamond Spaulding (American Heritage), who set a new PR with her time of 24.04.  Javianne Oliver (Monroe Area GA) finished third in 24.10.

Boys 200m Dash

After four sprint relays in three days, all of them ending up on the podium as All-Americans, you would think any Suitland (MD) sprinter would be a little tired.  Not David Winters, though: finding himself a bit behind at the exit of the curve, he charged back to claim the elusive national title with a time of 21.13.  Great conditioning!  Home-state sprinters Harvey McSwain II (Crest NC) and Tevin Hester (Granville Central NC) finished second and third, respectively, followed by fellow Tar Heel Stater Cameron Hudson (Berry Academy NC); all of them were under 21.30.

Girls Distance Medley Relay

Ridgewood (NJ) took command early in the relay, then had to hold off a series of strong anchors coming from deep in the field to claim the title.  Catherine Pagano ran a strong final leg for Ridgewood to close it out in 11:50.73.  Lenape was close enough to challenge on the anchor, but Natalie Ocasio couldn't quite get there, coming in with a time of 11:53.15.  Shenendehowa (NY) barely held on to third place, fending off a hard-charging Wesley Frazier (Ravenscroft NC, running as Zussen TC).  With a large contingent of supporter in the stands to cheer her on, many of them shirtless, Frazier ran her second 4:48 within a roughly 20-minute span to go from 8th to nearly 3rd on her leg.

Boys Distance Medley Relay

This race could have been a fine conclusion for the whole meet, as it produced the top five times in the country this year.  The race was incredibly exciting, with all five team in striking range of the win for most of the race, and there were many lead changes and momentum swings to excite the crowd.  The first to cross the line was Marshfield (MA), who benefited from an enormous final surge by Joel Hubbard.  They were able to hold off fellow Massachusetts squad Pembroke, who in turn had to fight to take second place from Christian Brothers (NJ).  The fast section featured 5 teams under 10:05 and 7 at 10:10 or faster, and so it was a great fit in the middle of an exciting night of races.

American Heritage (FL) took the lead on the second leg and was able to open up a bit of a lead, but then had to withstand a furious charge from Wakefield (NC) anchor Ariah Graham.  The Floridians ended up running 3:45.13, with Wakefield clocking in at 3:46.28.  Garden City (NY) followed on Graham's heels to get into third place with a time of 3:47.02.

Boys 4x400m Relay

This was a battle of attrition as top seed Boys and Girls progressively wore out one team after another.  A set of five contenders on the second leg was whittled down to an epic two-team battle, as Knightdale absolutely refused to go away.  It took a final lunge at the line for Boys and Girls to secure the championship, as Knightdale's anchor Da'Quan Smalls poured literally all of his energy into his pursuit, so much so that he had to receive some medical attention after the race (thankfully, he was fine after about 10 minutes).  The final winning margin was 0.04 seconds, 3:14.95 to 3:14.99, and that was a fantastic ending to the weekend's competition.  After the race, the crowd of runners, coaches, and officials lingered on the infield, seemingly not wanting the beautiful evening to end.
