Summary: The atmosphere was electric from the beginning, as the music blared and the athletes mingled and settled into the routines of preparing for a meet.
The stadium filled with fans, and the finish line became a cacophony of cheers for every event and every athlete, just as it should be at Hayward.
Cadija Harris couldn't believe what she saw when she looked at the scoreboard, "I'm shocked, we're so excited. We came here to win this".
Chandler AZ girls did win, by sweeping all the field events, to top the competition by nearly 200 points, scoring 7721.65 points.
Chandler came into the meet with a goal of winning the title, and accomplished the feat with the leadership of Hannah Carson, who won the girls shot put and discus with throws of 42-04 and 132-04. Jasmine Todd added an 18-09.25 long jump, Cadija Harris jumped 5-05.75 in the high jump, and Haley Bowser went 10-11 in the pole vault.
Columbia NJ finished 2nd in the competition with 7528.17 points. Brittney Jackson was 2nd in the 800 in 2:11.12 while Ty-Vonna Johnson was 2nd in the 400 with a time of 55.42. Kayann Richards added a 2nd in the 100H with a time of 14.06.
In the boys competition Vista Murietta CA left no doubt that they were in control of their own destiny during the meet. Bernard Quinn won the 400 in 48.49 and Jovonte Slater added the 100 in 10.56 to highlight the team effort.
"I am feeling so much honor and pride right now, that I was able to win and help my team", beamed Slater after his race.
Brookwood GA rocketed to 2nd with the effort of Tyler Anyan, who won the Mile in 4:12.76.
"This is surreal…this is awesome. It was very special that there were 3, 4, 500 people around the home stretch", commented Anyan after his victory.
The first Nike Track Nationals is in the books, and it was an amazing meet for athletes and spectators alike.
