Four Standouts Shine in Friday RunningLane Finals

Day one of the 2025 RunningLane Track Championships saw some of the nation's top high school talent toe the line Friday night in the Boys and Girls Championship 800m and 3200m races. While no national records fell, the races delivered plenty of drama, personal bests, and hard-earned victories under the lights.

Let's dive in.

Boys 800m Championship - Jeffcoat Digs Deep for the Win

In one of the most tightly contested races of the night, Cooper Jeffcoat, the junior from Alabama, held off a strong challenge from South Carolina senior Kaleb Burroughs to take the title in a personal best of 1:49.75.

The two athletes were locked in from the gun, with nearly identical splits through the first lap -- Jeffcoat in 55.46, Burroughs in 55.45. It remained a tactical battle down the homestretch, but Jeffcoat's closing strength gave him the edge, improving on his previous PR of 1:53.29 set in April at the Mountain Brook Invitational.

Boys 3200m Championship - Shelly Surges in Chaotic Finish

Matthew Shelly, the senior out of Arkansas, emerged victorious in a thrilling and tactical 3200m race. Shelly clocked 8:47.02, just edging fellow senior Kaden Evans, who crossed the line in 8:47.52The race saw a crowded front pack through the opening laps before the leaders began to separate in the final third. Shelly timed his move perfectly, taking control late and withstanding a furious surge from Evans to secure the win.

Girls 800m Championship - Del Solar Breaks Through

Aurora Bertelsen Del Solar, a junior, made a big statement in the Girls 800m Championship with a gutsy win and new personal best of 2:06.80. She edged out Texas senior Mia Perez in a race that was competitive from start to finish.

The duo came through the bell separated by just 0.13 seconds, both hitting the halfway mark in 62-high, running shoulder to shoulder. Del Solar began to create separation in the final 100 meters, using a well-timed move to secure the victory. Her time shaved over a second off her previous PR of 2:08.37, set earlier this season at the Spring Break Invitational at IMG.

Girls 3200m Championship - Bishop Pulls Away Late

Gabbie Bishop, a junior from Arkansas, showcased tactical patience and late-race power to win the Girls 3200m Championship in 10:07.97, a personal best by nearly three seconds. She held off Margaret Barlow in a race that saw the two run virtually even through the majority of the laps.

Lap after lap, Bishop and Barlow matched strides until Bishop made her decisive move with 250 meters remaining, opening a gap that Barlow couldn't close. Bishop had previously run 10:10.61 at the Texas Relays earlier this spring and continues to prove she's among the nation's rising distance stars.

Looking Ahead: All Eyes on Coombs and Pearce

As Saturday night approaches, two compelling storylines are on the radar for fans and scouts alike.

Corbin Coombs, of Organ Mountain High School in New Mexico, is making a serious bid to become one of the next U.S. prep milers to break the elusive 4-minute barrier. The Wake Forest commit has run in the low 4:00s multiple times, including 4:01 this season and 4:04 as a junior.

On the girls' side, Aria Pearce could quietly steal the show in the 400m. The Kansas sophomore is currently ranked No. 1 in her state in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, with blistering PRs of 11.38, 23.14, and a 54.00 seed time over 400m. If conditions line up, she could put down one of the top sophomore marks in the country.
