The Florida Distance Project - Mar. 23-Apr. 5

BOYS

800 Meter Run

As we head into the postseason, 143 boys in the rankings this season have run under 2:00. In the last two weeks, 13 of the 16 sub-1:55 performances in the rankings were run. Only two underclassmen ran sub-1:55 over the last two weeks. Approximately 50%, or 72 of the 143, are underclassmen who have run sub-2:00 on the season. Only four underclassmen are in the current top 20, and it took a 1:55.13 to get there.  What can be taken from this? One, as the season progresses, the times drop dramatically, and two, when it comes to the boys in the distance races, maturity and experience are important. Belen senior Joseph Socarras leads the state with a 1:48.92.

1600 Meter Run

The depth of talent in Florida and nationally in high school in the distance races is incredible. For high schoolers, running 4:30 used to be a standard. If you ran under 4:20, you were considered a top talent. We had 14 boys run under 4:20.00 just over the last two weeks. To be in the current top 20, you must have a sub-4:20 performance. We have six boys in the state with runs under 4:15, and four of those runs came in the last two weeks. Gulf Breeze sophomore Andrew Beroset leads the state at 4:08.52. Of the six boys under 4:15, four of them are in 3A. The 3A 1600 at state will be one of the highlight events of the two days.
