It was the weekend of Jane Hedengren.
On Thursday, the Timpview (UT) senior shattered the indoor national 5,000m record. Three days later, she returned to The Armory at Nike Indoor Nationals and delivered the fastest mile in high school history.
Hedengren clocked an astounding 4:26.14 to break the 4:27.97 indoor record that Sadie Engelhardt set earlier this season.
Engelhardt had run that time on the same track at the 2025 Millrose Games. She was in a field of professional runners and etched her name ahead of Mary Cain, who now sits at No. 3 all-time on the high school list.
Hedengren's time is not only the fastest time in indoor history, but in overall high school history. In 2022, Addy Wiley ran 4:26.16 to run the fastest 1,600m in HS history, which was then converted to a 4:27.73 mile. However, that mark did not stand as the high school national record.
How Did She Do It?
Hedengren wasted no time in jumping out to the lead. She split 1:06.11 through the opening 409m.
Her pace didn't fluctuate and she continued to clip 33-second laps throughout the rest of the race. Unbelievably, all but two laps fell outside of that 33-second margin. Those two laps were 32.15 and 32.63, respectively.
She was near perfect throughout her race and commanded control of the field and the crowd as they roared her forward.
Hedengren split 4:07.68 through 1,500m en route to her mile performance.
What's Next For Jane?
Earlier this morning, Nike announced that the company signed Jane Hedengren to an NIL agreement. This is the latest move in her career as she is quickly becoming a household name in the American distance running community.
Hedengren is currently committed to Brigham Young University. The BYU Cougars won the NCAA Cross Country team title in the fall and performed well at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track And Field Championship.
