Jane Hedengren's legacy grew after running the fastest 3200m race in U.S. high school history, clocking in at 9:37.50 at the Simplot Games.
Hendegren started her track season at the REP Distance Challenge with a 4:36.23 indoor mile at 4,500ft above sea level. At the Simplot Games, she stayed at 4,500ft and again achieved a remarkable distance time at elevation.
Mary Cain holds the 2-mile indoor record of 9:38.68 from the New Balance Boston Games 2013 at sea level. Cain's converted en-route 3200m is the only time faster than Hendgren's in history at 9:35.32.
Converting Hedengren's 3200m time would place her just about 2 seconds behind Cain's historic mark. Her 2-mile conversion is 9:40.85.
However, considering the 4,500ft altitude conversion, she's running about 9:25 in the 2 mile.
Later this season, the Timpview UT senior may attempt to break the record at the Arcadia Invitational. She briefly mentioned her potential racing schedule in post-race interviews.
She has routinely competed at Arcadia at sea level in sunny California in the past two seasons. Hedengren placed second twice to Sadie Engelhardt in the mile and finished eighth as a junior in the 3200m.
A month ago, Hedengren was named the 2024 Gatorade National Cross Country Player ahead of what seems to be the beginning of an impressive track season.
