The 2024 Foot Locker Nationals brought the country's best high school runners to Balboa Park in San Diego for a thrilling showdown. With crisp morning temperatures and a firm course underfoot, the stage was set for an unforgettable conclusion to the cross-country season.
Gavenas Surges for His First National Title
Among the seasoned competitors was Tamrat Gavenas, the top returner from last year's meet. Gavenas, who had battled back from a midseason injury, delivered a stunning performance to claim his first national title. After staying in the lead pack through the first two miles, Gavenas surged to the front after the 2.5-mile mark and never looked back, crossing the finish line in 15:23.9.
The race began with Ben Crane and Jack Graffeo setting a fast pace, leading the field through the first mile and up the challenging hill. By the 1.5-mile mark, the Midwest region had asserted its dominance, holding a 16-point lead. However, by the 2-mile mark, six runners were within four seconds of each other, with no individual runner yet able to break away.
It was then that Gavenas made his decisive move. With the finish line in sight, he surged up the final hill, passing the remaining contenders and taking control of the race. His victory was especially sweet as he had fought his way back from an injury that threatened to derail his season. Missing some time earlier in the year, Gavenas returned to peak form just in time for the national championships. His win marked the culmination of a remarkable comeback and solidified his place as one of the nation's top distance runners.

Midwest Region Dominates to Take Home the Title
The Midwest region dominated the team competition at the 2024 Foot Locker Nationals, leading from the first mile and maintaining their advantage throughout the race. The team's strong showing was highlighted by their impressive depth, with five runners finishing in the top ten.
Juan Gonzalez's runner-up finish in 15:27.4 set the tone for the Midwest, but the team's success was built on the collective effort of their top performers. Sam Quagliaroli secured fourth in 15:35.0, Ben Crane was 6th (15:42.4), Sean Fries was 9th (15:45.2) and Philip Cupial was 10th (15:46,80) with all of the Midwest's scoring runnings delivering strong performances, all with top ten finishes.
With their five athletes finishing in the top ten, the Midwest's dominance was undeniable. The team finished with just 31 points, comfortably ahead of second-place Northeast (49 points) and third-place West (63 points). The South, despite a solid individual showing from Keegan Smith (5th), finished in fourth with 83 points.
The Midwest's consistent strength at every position was key to their victory, and their impressive depth in the top ten ensured they would claim the team title at the 2024 Foot Locker Nationals.
