Heartland Showdown - Teams and Runners Punch NXN Tickets

---

The 2024 NXR Heartland Regional Championships meet at Yankton Trail Park in South Dakota showcased elite high school talent vying for coveted spots at Nike Cross Nationals. With perfect racing conditions, the meet kicked off the series of regional competitions and saw thrilling performances on both the boys' and girls' sides.

Boys' Championship Race

The boys' race at the 2024 Nike Cross Regionals Heartland meet was one of the most anticipated showdowns of the season. With three undefeated seniors - Manny Putz, Juan Gonzalez, and Robert Mechura - taking the line, the race promised to deliver, and it did not disappoint. Putz, ranked #1 nationally, entered as the favorite, followed closely by Gonzalez at #2 and Mechura at #5, creating one of the most highly anticipated individual races of the entire Nike regional series.

In a thrilling battle, Gonzalez of Fremont (Nebraska) seized the win with a time of 14:34.3, reversing the order from last year when he finished third behind Mechura. Putz of Onalaska (Wisconsin) was a close second in 14:35.1, while Mechura from Roseville (Minnesota), last year's champion, finished third with a time of 14:36.0. The close finish between these three nationally ranked runners underscored the high stakes and competitive energy of the meet.

Spring Hill, hailing from Kansas and fresh off a win at the Kansas 5A State Championships, claimed the boys' team title at the NXR Heartland meet with 153 points. They narrowly edged out Sioux Falls Lincoln, who finished second with 163 points, and Bismarck, who tallied 195 points. This victory secured Spring Hill's and Sioux Falls Lincoln's spots at Nike Cross Nationals. Leading the charge for Spring Hill was Logan Beckman, who finished 10th with a time of 15:01.2. Beckman made an impressive leap from 60th place last year to the top ten this season. He was followed by Daghyn True, who clocked in at 15:09.2 for 20th place, showing a marked improvement from his 86th-place finish in 2023.

Sioux Falls Lincoln finished in second place with 163 points to claim the second national qualifying spot. Coming off their South Dakota State AA Championship title, the Patriots showcased their depth and teamwork in a competitive field. Joseph Levesque led the team, finishing 38th in 15:21.3, while Miles Lechtenberg was close behind in 41st place at 15:24.7. Their strong finish solidified their national bid, marking an impressive chapter in the Patriots' season.

Girls' Championship Race

Marissa Ferebee of Pella (Iowa) delivered a standout performance to win the girls' individual title with a personal best of 16:25.5, staying undefeated on the season. Ferebee's victory was especially sweet after finishing 69th overall at this meet a year ago. Ruby Ihmels from Bismarck (North Dakota) followed in 16:34.6, while Ryin Miller from Seaman (Kansas) claimed third with a time of 16:44.6. Katelyn Rupe and Libby Castelli, both seniors running unattached, rounded out the top five with strong finishes. This marks the second consecutive year that Rupe and Castelli have finished in the top five at NXR Heartland.

In the girls' team race, Wayzata (Minnesota) dominated with 81 points to secure their third straight Heartland title and a spot at Nike Cross Nationals, well ahead of Johnston (Iowa) with 139 points and Pleasant Valley (Iowa) with 177 points. Wayzata was led by 9th-place finisher Maddie Gullickson, who clocked in at 17:11.3, and 10th-place finisher Lila Golomb, who finished in 17:28.1. Neither Gullickson nor Golomb competed at last year's meet for Wayzata, but their stellar performances helped propel the team to another championship. Johnston, led by 13th-place finisher Alyx Woodley (17:35.2) and 40th-place finisher Payton Crabb (18:09.7), earned the second spot to Nationals with a 139-point finish. Last year, Johnston finished just one spot out of the NXN berth in third place, but their efforts this season secured their return to the big stage.
