GREENSBORO -- Listen up, Texas, you have a star on your hands.

Denton-area Ruel Newberry obliterated the former AAU national record at 3,000 meters on Saturday at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, clocking a winning time of 8:34.83 inside Truist Stadium.

The time was 57 seconds faster than the next-best competitor. It was only off the age group world record by 15 seconds. It also set a new eighth-grade class record, passing the former mark of 8:35.35, which was set in 2023.

Newberry entered having ran 8:38 in his AAU Regional in June. He followed on Saturday with another personal record, closing the last 200 meters in 32 seconds.

The performance shattered the former AAU national record of 8:59.75, which was last set in 2022 by Gannon Dolan in 8:59.75.

Newberry is a rising high school freshman set to begin his prep career over the cross country season.
