Avery Miller knew she needed a special effort in her final event of the heptathlon on Sunday at the AAU Junior Olympic Games.
She was trailing in points heading into the 800m.
But the rising senior at Cumberland Allegany (MD) was up to the challenge.
Taking control early, Miller finished off things in 2:17.97, clinching the seven-event series with a point total of 4,924, which was just a shade off her U.S. No. 5 mark of 5,057 from New Balance Nationals Outdoor in June.
