The Class of 2027 is moving deeper into high school competition and this upcoming cross country season will become a test of who can break 15 minutes for 5,000 meters.
Luckily for Marcelo Mantecon, he's already ahead of the class.
Here are the top rising sophomore boys in the 3,200m and 5K combined. All results are based on their freshman year performances over the 2023 cross country season and this outdoor season.
Mantecon leads rising sophomore boys with a combined time of 23:38.02. The Belen Jesuit Preparatory School runner hit his 3,200m personal best at the Arcadia Invitational in April, clocking in at 8:50.02. Mantecon was the only freshman in the 3,200m invitational boys event.
Over the cross season, Mantecon ran 14:48.00 at the Great American XC Festival, which was a new freshman class record outright for the distance in cross country. The Florida run...
