Special moments don't always have to come from state championships or national meets.
For Nixa's (MO) Jackson Cantwell, a record-breaking throw took place at the MSHSAA Class 5 District 6 meet on Saturday.
In the middle of his school's turf football field, Cantwell obliterated the sophomore class record in the shot put.
The 16-year-old underclassmen -- and son of Olympians Christian Cantwell and Teri Cantwell (formerly Steer) -- became the first boy in sophomore-class history to throw over 70 feet in this event, netting an 74-9.75 toss, which puts him at U.S. No. 2 in the season and No. 8 on the all-time list.
Cantwell sits right behind Hortonville's (WI) senior Ben Smith, who went 75-1 last weekend at the Fond du Lac Quad meet.
His district competition didn't end there.
Cantwell also won the discus with a 179-1 throw and will most likely head into the state championships as the favorite in both events.
He will look to defend his state title in the shot put in two weeks in Jefferson City, Missouri.
