There's something about the 400 meter hurdles for Michelle Smith.
The Montverde Academy senior and University of Georgia recruit ran the sixth-fastest time in U.S. history on Saturday at the 18th Carolina Spring Break Classic in Puerto Rico, clocking a winning performance of 56.06 as she downed a field of collegians and internationals.
Smith is no stranger to the 400mH.
The Virgin Islands national, 17, won two NACAC U18 titles last year in the 400m and 400mH and finished second at the Pan American U20 Championships at the discipline.
Prior to Saturday, her personal best at the distance was 56.66, which she accomplished at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout last April.
Smith is coming off an indoor season where she ran PRs of 24.48 for 200m, 53.55 for 400m, 8.65 for the 60mH and scored a best in the long jump. Smith was also a member of Montverde Academy's national record in the 4x400 in January at The VA Showcase.
Smith went on to win a New Balance Nationals Outdoor title at the event and ran under under 59 seconds a total of four times.
