Tamrat Gavenas was no stranger to Boston University's indoor track before this weekend.
The Philips Academy Andover (MA) junior had raced at the famed venue (i.e. the fastest indoor track in the U.S.) several times before, always notching quality efforts.
But his performance on Friday took it to another level.
The reigning third-place finisher at Foot Locker Nationals converted on a career best 8:14.94 for 3,000 meters, earning a U.S. No. 3 performance in the process and the No. 2 indoor time in Massachusetts history.
"I felt strong," he said. "I knew I was prepared going on. So it felt like a solid effort."
With the result, Gavenas became the third athlete this season to clock a sub-8:15 performance, joining Josiah Tostenson (8:08.70) and Andrew Hauser (8:14.76), while he's now only one of 27 high school boys all-time to achieve that mark.
