This indoor track and field matchup was tailor-made for fireworks.
One of the nation's top indoor athletes at 200 meters, Paint Branch's (MD) Nicholas Spikes, was pitted against a top returnee, Weselyan Christian Academy's Donovan Calhoun, on Sunday in the club format of The VA Showcase on Sunday at Virginia Beach.
Spikes was in form. Calhoun was ready unload for his first 200m of the season.
The race delivered.
Spikes never wavered in Lane 5, issuing a commanding start before rolling into the final straightaway with supreme confidence, as he earned a U.S. No. 2 time of 21.20, improving upon his best of 21.27 from December.
Calhoun trailed early and made up ground late, but it wasn't enough. He closed with a fourth-place finish in 21.98 while Port City's Cashmere James and Nick Gau were second and third in 21.96.
