VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The stars aligned for a superior 60 meter girls race on Saturday.
But while the reality of a national-class race lived up to the billing, a bittersweet note befell the final moment, as Mia Brahe-Pedersen, the winner of the girls USATF final in 7.22 seconds, came up limping just seconds after her U.S. No. 7 all-time performance.
There was no word on the final diagnosis for the Lake Oswego star. She came up holding her right leg after the race.
It did not diminish her overall performance, as Brahe-Pedersen, who opened up in the prelims in 7.28, followed with a six-hundredths of a second improvement in the final.
She needed every single meter, too, making up a deficit to Hodge and Selby in the final 20 meters.
Hodge finished second overall in 7.24 seconds -- good for U.S. No. 9 all-time -- while Selby was third in 7.28, which was just a hundredth of a second off of her career best of 7.27 last year.
