Boys have found it hard to go after the Manhattan Invitational record in recent years.

It's been no easy task.

Only two boys athletes in the history of the vaunted 4K race have ever crossed the finish line in under 12 minutes. Edward Cheserek, a high school legend for St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey, surpassed the threshold for the first time in 2011, clocking a time of 11:55.39.

Alex Ostberg, a runner from Darien (NC), was next to do it in 2014, though he came up two seconds shy of Cheserek's time.

Since then, runners from the Northeast have found it been nearly impossible to chase after the mark. Last year, St. Raphael Academy's Devan Kipyego had his sights on it but came up short, winning the Eastern States race in 12:14.40. That mark was 10th all-time.

Lucky for us, the Manhattan Invitational comes to New York City...
