No. 2: Landon Heemeyer
- - -
School: Rocky Mountain (ID)
Year: 2024
2022 Notable Finishes: 9th at Champs Sports Nationals in 15:14.50; 4th at Champs Sports West in 15:32.00; 8th at NXR Northwest in 15:24.10; 1st at Idaho State Championships in 14:38.79.
Analysis: Heemeyer, a BYU commit, was only a second off the Idaho state soil record in 2022.
Better yet, his performance came at the Idaho state championships, where he clocked a meet record of 14:38.79. The only athlete standing in his way? American Fork's Daniel Simmons. When Simmons was a sophomore, he ran 14:37 at the RunningLane XC Championships.
Is it coincidence that Heemeyer is now chasing after Simmons on the national level, too? Maybe it's perfect symmetry.
Heemeyer is Rocky Mountain's No. 1 and the best runner since Michael Slagowski, who broke four minutes in the mile in 2016. Can the Idaho athlete elevate past his stellar junior season?
He won four times, including a top win at the Bob Firman Invitational. He finished as an All-American at Champs Sports Nationals.
