Analysis: The 2022 season began and ended the same way for Southerland. Strong.
She began the season with 12 straight 5K wins. Southerland then ran a personal 5K best time of 17:05 at the IHSAA Regional Championships to win. A week later, her streak came to an end as she finished second at the IHSAA State XC Championships. Later on in the season, she finished sixth at the Champs Sports Midwest Region Championships.
Even though she didn't compete at nationals, she excelled on the track. Southerland remained undefeated in the 1,600m distance and even set a personal best of 4:43 at the state championships.
She clocked 2:05 in the 800m to be U.S. No. 8, 4:41 in the mile for U.S. No. 10 and she was U.S. No. 29 in the 3,200m with a 10:14.
