No. 21: Rocky Mountain (ID)
- - -
Analysis: The returning champions of Class 5A in Idaho absolutely dominated last year, covering the Lewistown Orchard course with a 15:11 average.
The next closest team, Boise Senior, was back in 15:43. Bishop Kelly, which competed in Class 4A, ran an average of 15:36. Rocky Mountain only returns four runners from that team, but senior Landon Heemeyer, a national title contender, is among those back.
Boise Senior returns its top three runners while Rocky Mountain lost three out of its top five. But when you're at the top, other teams have to knock you off the ledge. That's currently where Rocky Mountain finds itself now, currently entrenched in Idaho's No. 1 spot until another program can take it down.
Biggest Question: Will Rocky Mountain re-load behind Heemeyer?
This is one of those "actions speak louder than words" type of moments. Rocky Mountain has to figure out its roster, develop its top five and then run well. But we don't doubt Idaho's top team one bit.
