* Luke Anderson wins the 1,500m at the AAU Junior Olympics in a record-breaking time of 3:57.14
DES MOINES, Iowa -- To kick off a partly cloudy Tuesday morning, Luke Anderson toed the line inside Drake Stadium for the 1,500m finals.
He wouldn't disappoint.
Anderson eventually nabbed his third straight title in the event, but he also scored an AAU national record, clocking a finishing time of 3:57.14. He surpassed Brandon Miller's record of 3:58.10 in 2018.
From the start, Anderson positioned himself in the front pack. His gears shifted with 700m to go as the rising junior from Salado High School made his move.
As the crowd rose to its feet to bring him home, Anderson slung off the final bend with no other competitors in sight besides the clock.
Last year, Anderson also won the 2,000m steeplechase in 6:13.40.
During the 2023 spring season, he set a 1,600m personal best of 4:22 and 9:53 in the 3,200m. He also was fifth in the UIL Class 4A 800m state final. Anderson's brother, Daniel, was third in 4:06.
