On paper, the championship boys 400m final on Saturday at New Balance Nationals Outdoor was one the most anticipated races of the afternoon.

Five of the nation's top eight fastest quarter-milers took center stage on the Franklin Field track.

In the mix was NBNI freshman champion Quincy Wilson of Bullis School (MD) and U.S. No. 1 Tavon Underwood of Mead (CO) High School.

But when the start gun went off, it was Zyaire Nuriddin of Montverde Academy (FL) who took out the first 250m aggressively.

As Nuriddin was coming off the turn, however, he wasn't able to hold off the closing speeds of Underwood and Wilson.

Underwood and Wilson overtook Nuriddin in the final homestretch, but it was Underwood who had the slight advantage. The Kansas State University signee finished strong and was the first boy across the finish line as he stopped the clock with a new meet record time of 45.82, while the freshman dipped under 46 seconds for the first time this season with a 45.99.

Micahi Danzy, the 2023 FHSAA outdoor state champion, was third in 46.02.

The Colorado state champion eclipsed the meet record by nearly a second and a half as Judson Lincoln IV's time of 47.26 stood for a year.
