GIRLS 400m

Time: 50.69

Where: USATF U20 Outdoor Championships

Record-Holder: Sanya Richards-Ross, St. Thomas Aquinas (FL), 2002

Two high school girls in history have broken 51 seconds for 400 meters.

The national record-holder? Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross leads the way with her time of 50.69 seconds from the USATF U20 Championships in 2002.

The simple fact is that this record is as honest as any out there. It's lasted 21 years, and we wouldn't be surprised if it lasted another 20 years.

The perfect 400m girls runner holds a combination of quick-twitch speed in the 100m, endurance beyond 400m, an ability to maintain speed from 250 to 350m and then have an extra gear in the final 50 meters. They also may have to be more of a 400m runner than a 100m-200m athlete ...even though they may have big potential in those two events.

Richards-Ross, the best in high school history, had all that and more.

It's the reason why this record still stands today.
