Akala Garrett's final season at Albemarle (NC) High School may be upon us, but that didn't stop her from putting together one of the fastest times in North Carolina and high school track and field history on Friday.
At the NCHSAA Class 1A State Championships, the University of Texas recruit put together a nearly perfect 300mH performance.
From the first to the final hurdle, Garrett was completely in control.
The 2022 World U20 400mH champion clocked a new state record of 40.26, which ties for No. 7 all-time in high school history.
Garrett fell to her knees in shock at North Carolina A&T's Truist Stadium as she heard the announcer declare her time and inform the crowd that she had broke the overall state record of 40.42, which was set back in 2016 when Olympian Anna Cockrell won the NCISAA 3A Championship title.
Garrett also surpassed former 100mH world record holder Kendra Harrison's 41.41 mark from 12 years ago.
Garrett also grabbed crowns in the 100mH with a 13.52 and 24.25 in the 200m.
