The most anticipated race at the FHSAA Class 2A Championships on Thursday lived up to all the hype as four boys all had legitimate chances to win the 400m final.
This race consisted of the top four quarter milers in the state who, throughout the spring season, had all broken 47 seconds. The foursome included Micahi Danzy, Mekhi Gammons, Aidan Dixon, and Jayvian Greene.
At the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium, the starting gun went off and the top boys in the state became the chase pack. After the first 100m, Gammons and Danzy began to add separation in the outside lanes.
Danzy, the state runner-up from 2022, made a decision coming off the final turn that he would shift into another gear. He ultimately separated himself from the rest of the field and he was able to secure the victory in a new personal best of 46.11.
Dixon was able to finish strong down the home stretch with a 46.71, while Gammons finished in 46.85 for third. Greene, the Montverde Academy junior, finished fourth in 47.92.
As Danzy continued his undefeated season, he moved up to U.S. No. 4 with his state performance. The junior also won the 200m title in 21.16 (+0.5) and was third in the long jump with a 22-9.75 leap.
