PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Sophia Rodriguez, the burgeoning 14-year-old distance star out of Dallastown, Pennsylvania, navigated near-like-monsoon conditions on Friday night at The Penn Relays to clock a time of 16:51.39 for 5,000 meters, a U.S. No. 2 performance.
The time was No. 2 in eighth-grade class history, only behind Grace Ping, the former Minnesota- and Arizona-area standout who ran 16:26.83 in 2017.
Rodriguez, who was aiming for a sub-16:30 performance, finished fourth overall in an open women's division.
A little over a month ago, she clocked a time of 16:39.08 at adidas Track Nationals, which was a new indoor class record and a U.S. No. 2 performance.
Rodriguez continues to showcase her potential. Over the indoor season she ran 4:53.76 in the full mile, 10:21.39 in the 3,200m and 16:39.08 in the 5K.
