The University of Tennessee showed its commitment to improving its track program in May 2022.
The Volunteers hired Duane Ross as head coach and gave him a five-year contract worth $450,000 per year, a significant increase from the $230,000 that the previous coach, Beth Alford-Sullivan, was making, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Ross, an Olympian, had spent the previous decade at North Carolina A&T, helping the Aggies become a national power.
Still, the opportunity to coach in the Southeastern Conference was too good to pass up. Now, less than a year into the job, Ross has shown he can use Tennessee's cachet and resources to sign top recruits.
