Throwback Thursday: Gorriaran Sets 600m HS Record At Penn

THE PENN RELAYS PRESENTED BY TOYOTA

LIVE COVERAGE BEGINS AIRING FROM APRIL 27-29

At Franklin Field in 2022, Sophia Gorriaran added one of the first of many accolades to come to her resume as one of the top high school middle distance runners in U.S. history.

The Moses Brown School (RI) star, then just 16 years old, toed the line at The Penn Relays Carnival in the women's Olympic Development 600m with some of the most legendary names in track and field.

The list of competitors? Only the reigning Olympic 800m champion Athing Mu, multi-time world medalist Ajee Wilson and Jamaican star Natoya Goule, among many other professionals.

But that star-studded lineup didn't phase Gorriaran as she would run her way to a fourth-place overall finish in a new high school national record mark of 1:25.22. Mu would take the win in 1:22.74, followed by runner-up Goule in 1:24.09.

That destroyed the previous prep best of 1:29.13 from 2019.

Since that marquee 600m, Gorriaran has gone on to cement her name in the U.S. high school track and field record books, logging all-time performances in events from the 500m up to the mile.

Goule and Wilson will return this season for the 2023 Penn Relays Carnival presented by Toyota in the same 600m Olympic Development event set to take place on Sat., April 29. For more meet coverage and information, be sure to visit the meet page.
