LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Claire Stegall was patient for nearly four minutes.
But by the time the bell lap came for the Nolensville (TN) sophomore on Saturday in the girls mile, she knew it was time to go.
From there, one of the country's top sophomore mile prospects took off and swept past Ciara O'Shea, going on to earn the victory and a new Tennessee State Record in 4:44.62 at Eastern Indoors on Saturday.
The performance marked an 11-second improvement from this same race last year. It also was just two seconds shy of her outdoor mark of 4:42, which she accomplished as a freshman in 2022.
