There's breaking a record, and then there's breaking a record.
On Friday in Birmingham, Alabama, Alex Leath took the 800 meters into his own hands and ripped off a jaw-breaking run of 1:49.60, which not only set him up for the incoming Alabama state championships, but it also re-set the state record at the distance by over a second.
Leath also became the first athlete under 1:50 indoors this season.
He also ran under 1:50 for the first time in his career -- in fact, he ran under 1:51 for the first time, too.
He came through the halfway mark roughly around 53 seconds.
Leath's most recent race at the distance was his time of 1:53.34 from Jan. 7. His career-best mark of 1:51.51 came in 2021 during the RunningLane Track Championships.
The performance on Friday, which came inside the CrossPlex, was nothing short of amazing from the Vestavia Hills (AL) senior. Leath won an Alabama Class 7A indoor title in the 1,600m last season. He has yet to win an 800m state title.
Last year at the 800m distance, Leath finished third at NSAF Indoor Nationals. He was fourth at New Balance Nationals Indoor.
